Women have played a vital role in the development of computing and technology. Women such as Ada Lovelace, who is credited with writing the world’s first computer program in the 19th century, and Grace Hopper, who developed the first compiler and played a key role in the development of the COBOL programming language in the mid-20th century, have paved the way for future generations of female technologists.
Despite that, there is still much work to be done to ensure that women have equal opportunities and representation in tech today. According to the 2021 report “Women in Tech” published by TrustRadius:
- Women in tech are still underrepresented, with only 22% of respondents reporting that their company has equal gender representation.
- 64% of women in tech have experienced discrimination in the workplace based on their gender.
- The top three barriers women face when entering or advancing in tech are gender bias in hiring and promotions, a lack of female role models and mentors, and a male-dominated culture.
- The pandemic has had a significant impact on women’s careers in tech, with many women reporting increased caregiving responsibilities and challenges with remote work.
However, there are many women in tech today who are breaking down barriers, making significant contributions to the industry, leading innovation and driving progress. In this post, we highlight some recent contributions and innovations made by women in tech that are truly inspiring.
Kavya Kopparapu
Kavya Kopparapu is a high school student and the founder of Girls Computing League, a nonprofit organization that aims to inspire and empower girls to pursue computer science careers. Kopparapu has also been developing AI-powered solutions to address various social issues, including Alzheimer’s disease and climate change. Her work has been recognized by the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in the science category.
Tracy Chou
Tracy Chou is the founder of Block Party, a platform designed to combat online harassment. As a software engineer, she has been a vocal advocate for safer online spaces and has developed tools that empower users to take control of their online experiences. Chou has also been instrumental in driving the conversation around diversity in tech and has pushed for more transparency in tech companies’ hiring practices.
Jennifer Doudna
Jennifer Doudna is a biochemist who co-invented the CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technology, which has revolutionized the field of genetic engineering. This technology allows scientists to make precise edits to DNA sequences, opening up new possibilities for treating genetic diseases and developing more resilient crops. Doudna has been recognized for her groundbreaking work, receiving numerous awards and honors, including the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2020.
Fei-Fei Li
A computer science professor at Stanford University, Fei-Fei Li is a pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning. She is the co-founder of AI4ALL, a nonprofit organization that aims to increase diversity and inclusion in AI by providing opportunities for underrepresented groups to learn about and pursue careers in the field.
Megan Smith
A former Google executive, Megan Smith served as the Chief Technology Officer of the United States under President Barack Obama. She is an advocate for diversity and inclusion in tech and has worked to increase opportunities for underrepresented groups, particularly women and people of color.
Reshma Saujani
The founder of Girls Who Code, Reshma Saujani is a social entrepreneur and advocate for girls’ education in computer science. Girls Who Code is a nonprofit organization that works to close the gender gap in tech by providing girls with access to coding education and opportunities to pursue careers in the field.
Aniyia Williams
The founder and CEO of Tinsel, a company that produces wearable tech accessories, Aniyia Williams is an advocate for diversity and inclusion in the tech industry. She is also the founder of Black & Brown Founders, a nonprofit organization that provides resources and support for underrepresented founders in tech.
